About Matka Canyon

The Treska River carved this deep gorge through the limestone landscape. In 1938, a dam flooded the valley to create Lake Matka. The lake stretches for about 7 kilometers through the narrow rock walls.

The canyon is a recognized biodiversity hotspot. It protects 77 native butterfly species. Roughly 20% of the plant life here is endemic, growing nowhere else in the world.

Visitors arrive at Lake and Dam to start their journey. From there, you can hike the cliff edges or take a boat to the Vrelo Cave Complex.

This was one of the reasons for visiting North Macedonia. It's a quick trip from Skopje and the scenery is amazing. The guide was great and very knowledgeable of the history of the country and surrounding areas. The boat ride is very pleasent and the visit to the cave very surprising.

We saw a lot for a half day trip. Felt like it was a good amount of time. I enjoyed the boat ride in the Canyon. I had Eli once again who was great. It was nice to have the same guide two days in a row, because it makes you feel comfortable. She had great advice for my last days in Skopje.

Amazing tour, some fantastic scenery and Miha what a character, fantastic stories and loved the passion that he has. Thank you so much for making my experience in Skopje and Macedonia so special and hopefully as we say in Scotland "Haste Ye Back" to a fantastic country. Thank you

Fantastic day out in lovely scenic locations! Canyon Matka is very beautiful. Nice to be out in the fresh air & the countryside & see a different side of Skopje. Excellent tour guide (Miha) who explained a lot about Macedonian history & life today. Comfortable new aircon van to travel in. Lovely driver who doubled as a butler during our picnic stop.
