Reach the canyon by bus, taxi, or car. Bring local cash for boat tickets and sturdy shoes for the unpaved cliff paths.
Getting there
Options for the 15-kilometer journey from central Skopje.
| How | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus: Take JSP Bus 60 from Skopje's central transport center or city stops to the Matka terminus. | 45-60 mins | 35 MKD each way | You cannot pay with cash on the bus. You must purchase and load a Skopska transport card (or a 120 MKD day pass) in advance. |
| Car: Drive southwest from Skopje via local roads following signs for Matka. | 30 mins | Free parking | The road becomes narrow near the end, and the small parking lot fills up very quickly on summer weekends. |
| Taxi: Hire a metered taxi or negotiate a flat rate from Skopje city center. | 25-30 mins | Approx. 600-1000 MKD one-way | It is highly recommended to negotiate a waiting fee and a round-trip rate, as finding a free taxi to take you back from the canyon can be difficult. |
| Tour: Book a half-day guided excursion from Skopje with local operators. | 4-6 hours | €15 - €30 | Often combined with trips to the Millennium Cross on Mount Vodno, St. Panteleimon monastery, or the Macedonian Ethno Village. |

The canyon is open year-round. Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) provide the best hiking weather. Summer weekends bring heavy local crowds, making parking very difficult.

Practical packing advice
Always bring a light jacket or sweater. The deep canyon remains shaded and feels much cooler than central Skopje. Wear sturdy walking shoes, as the cliff paths lack safety barriers in sections and can be rocky.
You must bring cash in Macedonian Denars. Boat operators, kayak rentals, and small vendors rarely accept credit cards. Read our full guide on Entrance & Boat Prices for budget details.
