Choosing your route depends on your time and fitness. Both main trails start near the dam. They require sturdy shoes due to uneven rocks and steep drops. Entrance to all hiking paths is free.

What is the Canyon Rim trail like?

It is a 6-kilometer path carved directly into the limestone rock above the lake.

This is the most popular trail at the canyon. The path stays relatively flat as it follows the water. You do not need to walk the entire 6 kilometers. The first kilometer offers dramatic views of the gorge and is easy to complete.

How do you hike to St. Nicholas Shishovski?

You must climb a steep, wooded path on the opposite side of the main rim trail.

This hike takes about 1.5 hours to reach the 17th-century monastery. The trail goes up through the forest and gains significant elevation. The reward is a panoramic view of the canyon and the water below. Sturdy hiking shoes are essential.
