How deep is Vrelo Cave?

Divers have explored Vrelo Cave to a depth of 338 meters. This makes it one of the deepest underwater caves in the world.

The cave contains two crystal-clear internal lakes. These lakes plunge into unknown depths below the surface. Recent diving expeditions reached the 338-meter mark, breaking European cave diving records.

What is inside the cave?

The main illuminated chamber features a massive formation called the Pine Cone Stalagmite. You will also see the surfaces of the two deep internal lakes.

The Pine Cone dominates the center of the gallery. Its distinct shape makes it a popular subject for photography.

How do you get to Vrelo Cave?

You must take a boat or kayak from the Matka Dam area. A standard boat ride takes 45 to 60 minutes round-trip and costs around 500 MKD.

The boats drop passengers at a small wooden platform carved into the rock. From there, you climb a set of stone stairs to reach the entrance. Watch your step, as the stairs can be quite slippery.

Can you swim inside Vrelo Cave?

No, swimming is highly discouraged in the canyon and cave lakes. The water temperatures are freezing year-round.

The internal lakes are strictly for viewing and professional diving explorations. Strong currents and steep drops make the water dangerous for casual swimmers.
